I am John Doe, an experienced procurement manager specializing in the sourcing of manufacturing components and tools for our company. With over 15 years of industry experience, I have dealt with various challenges and opportunities in the global supply chain, particularly when it comes to buying plastic injection molds from different regions, including China. I am here to share with you what you need to know when buying plastic injection molds in China

We have been engaged in the purchase of plastic injection molds from China for the past 10 years. During the initial three years, we adopted the same mold purchasing approach in China as we did in Europe. Unfortunately, this led to a multitude of problems that hindered our production processes and affected the quality and timeliness of our products.

Specifically, we faced issues such as inconsistent mold quality, inaccurate dimensions, and poor surface finishes. These problems not only caused delays in our production schedules but also increased our rework and scrap rates, resulting in significant financial losses and customer dissatisfaction.

At this juncture, we made a radical shift in our policy when considering new plastic injection mold projects from Chinese mold makers. The following are the crucial tips we have meticulously summarized based on our experiences for buying plastic injection molds from China:

Provide Comprehensive Inquiries

It is of paramount importance to furnish detailed and exhaustive product specifications along with comprehensive injection mold specifications. Every minute detail should be accounted for, including but not limited to the minimum eye-bolt dimension, the cooling connector standard, the type and grade of the steel to be used for the mold, the expected lifespan of the mold, and the required maintenance intervals.

For instance, if the mold is intended for a high-volume production run, specifying a higher-grade steel with superior wear resistance becomes essential. Failing to include such critical details in the inquiry could lead to the manufacturer using an inappropriate material, resulting in premature mold failure and increased production costs in the long run.

Demand Mold Design Drafts in Quotations

When Chinese factories submit their quotations, they must concurrently provide a draft of the proposed plastic injection mold design. The absence of this crucial element makes it impossible to conduct a meaningful assessment of the economic viability and technical feasibility of their quotations.

A detailed mold design draft enables us to scrutinize factors such as the layout of the cavities and cores, the gating system, the cooling channels’ design, and the ejection mechanism. This allows for a precise evaluation of whether the mold structure is optimized for efficient production, uniform part quality, and minimal cycle times.

For example, an inefficient gating system could lead to weld lines or air traps in the molded parts, compromising their mechanical strength and aesthetic appearance. By having access to the design draft, we can identify and address such potential issues before committing to a particular quote.

Request Visual Evidence of Past Work

The Chinese mold factory is obligated to present us with a comprehensive set of materials, including videos, high-resolution sample photos, and detailed mold designs of similar projects they have successfully executed in the past.

This visual evidence serves as a powerful indicator of their technical capabilities, manufacturing expertise, and quality control standards. For instance, if we are in the market for a mold for complex automotive interior components, reviewing previous projects of a similar nature allows us to assess the manufacturer’s proficiency in handling intricate geometries, tight tolerances, and demanding surface finish requirements.

Evaluate the Quality Control System of the Injection Mold Manufacturer

In addition to the design and past work, it’s essential to assess the Chinese mold maker’s quality control processes. Request information on their inspection procedures at various stages of mold production, including raw material inspection, in-process checks, and final mold validation.

For example, do the manufacturers use advanced measurement equipment like coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to ensure dimensional accuracy? Do they have a system for tracking and addressing non-conformities? A robust quality control system is a strong indicator of the manufacturer’s ability to deliver molds that meet your quality expectations consistently.

Understand the Supply Chain and Lead Times

It’s crucial to have a clear understanding of the manufacturer’s supply chain and their ability to meet your project’s lead time requirements. Inquire about their sources of raw materials, availability of key components, and any potential bottlenecks in the production process.

For instance, if a particular type of steel needed for your mold is subject to long lead times, it’s important to know how the manufacturer manages such situations to avoid delays. Also, consider factors like shipping and customs clearance times if the molds are being imported.

Clarify Intellectual Property Rights and Confidentiality

Given the competitive nature of many industries, protecting your intellectual property is of utmost importance. Ensure that there is a clear agreement in place regarding ownership of the mold design and any related intellectual property rights. Also, establish confidentiality measures to safeguard your product designs and specifications.

For example, specify that the manufacturer cannot share your design information with third parties or use it for other projects without your consent. This helps prevent potential IP infringements and protects your business interests.
